Language learning
Nowadays, more and more non-Chinese parents want their kids to learn Chinese to stay competitive with the economic globalization. If none of the parents speaks Chinese at home, getting your kids enrolled in Chinese immersion classes is one of the top choices. It is also very critical for parents to create a Chinese language learning environment at home where your kids can keep practicing what they learned through daily life.
#1: Constantly expose to native-Chinese speaking environment
Studies have shown that children learn language much more from live speakers than they do from recorded ones. So by all means, engage your kids with native-Chinese speakers as much as you can. For examples, hire a Chinese nanny /babysitter/au pair, join Chinese playgroups/play dates, or plan a family trip to China.
#2: Learn together
The best way to learn is to teach. Ask your kids to teach you what they’ve learned in class. And encourage them to practice using Chinese every night.
#3: Play Chinese songs as background:
Music is a fantastic learning tools for children. You can choose some active Chinese children songs to dance along with your kids or some quiet and soothing Chinese lullabies to help them calm down before bedtime.
#4: Watch Chinese cartoons & movies together
Television and DVDs are useful when combined with parents interaction. Select some age-appropriate DVDs and have a Chinese movie night with your kids every so often.
#5: More Chinese characters, less pinyin
Children can easily learn to associate the Chinese symbols with the sounds without introducing pinyin system (the alphabetic Chinese)first. This way will allow them to recognize and memorize more Chinese written words instead of heavily replying on the alphabetic pinyin system to learn Chinese. You can start this with helping your kids make their own flashcards or labeling your household objectives with Chinese written symbols.
